Puerto Rico Ornithological Society (SOPI), Puerto Rico

The Puerto Rico Ornithological Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing awareness, conservation, and sustainable management of the birds of Puerto Rico and their surrounding ecosystems. We have collaborated in the conservation of local birds and their habitats for 25 years in Puerto Rico. Since 1995 SOPI has been part of multiple projects in favor of our birds and ecosystems. The organization works to promote a vision of conservation that incorporates entire ecosystems, through scientific research and activities that produce updated information on the status of birds on the island, using values such as transparency and respect for natural resources, and above all, the inclusion of citizens in our actions.

What is our role in CORESCAM?

The SOPI Scientific Committee provides CORESCAM with the development of an evaluation of the impact of intensified extreme hurricanes on the vulnerability and resilience of the biodiversity of birds in the Luquillo Experimental Forest, Puerto Rico. We also model the impact of hurricanes on the bird communities of the El Yunque National Forest, to understand how these disturbances affect the distribution of birds now and how they will do so in the future.
